Some Constituents of Opium Smoke.

Moissan has shown (Comptes Rendus, 6' Dec. 1892) that the amoke of good opium extract of chandoo contained only a very small quantity of morphine and pleasant odorous substances, and that the smoke of chandoo of indifferent quality contained

pyrrole, acetone, and hydropyridic bases. In the 1908 report of the Straits settlements and Federated Malay states Opium Commission, Appendices XXIII and XXIV, are two papers on the chemistry of of cum smoke. F. Dent found that the smoke from 100 grams of chandoo yielded 0.100 gram of

oog morphine, and H. Frases and B. J. Caton obtained

B.J. an almost identical result. As gross opium extract is very largely smoked in the East, it
